In Spring 2022, bacterial cellulose (BC) samples with incremental layering (1-5 layers) were placed in two distinct locations in Manitoba. The southern location, Winnipeg, features a continental climate, while the northern site, Churchill, experiences a sub-arctic environment. Each set of BC samples included 1-to-5 self-adhered layers of BC specimens encased in an acrylic container, alongside identical samples clamped onto a wooden surface. By comparing fully exposed samples to protected (enclosed) samples, the project we assess the effects of climate and protection levels on the durability and performance of bacterial cellulose products.
