Mycelium-Based Material
At the BIOM_Lab, a key area of research focuses on the growth and cultivation of mycelium, the vegetative network found in fungi. The mycelium can be used to colonize industrial or agricultural substrates such as sawdust, straw, hemp, flax, or coffee grounds, behaving as a natural adhesive. These colonized substrates can be moulded into custom shapes to create insulating or acoustic panels. The resulting products are biodegradable, have lower embedded energy than conventional construction materials and can have enhanced thermal or acoustic performance. Our research efforts aim to optimize mycelium-based products to align with local conditions.
